Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

  - This historic winery in the center of Barolo continues to undergo a huge renaissance under the guidance of Oscar Farinetti, who purchased the property in 2007. Intent on recapturing the estate’s former glory, Oscar Farinetti, along with his son Andrea, has embarked on a project to modernize the winery while retaining the classic, old-world style Borgogno fans have come to love.   - Alex Sanchez abandoned the hectic life of a career with McKinsey in Madrid for the bucolic hills of Piemonte when he married Elena Brovia. The Brovia family owns parcels in some of the most prestigious sites in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga, including Rocche, Villero, Bricco Fiasco and Voghera/Brea. The wines are made in an enlightened traditional style that captures immense grace and stature in every bottle.

  - Franco Conterno
  - Aldo Conterno was one of Piemonte’s giants until his untimely passing in 2012. Today, the winery is run by Aldo’s sons Giacomo, Franco and Stefano. The Aldo Conterno wines are essays into the unique qualities of a handful of pristine sites in Monforte. The flagship Barolo Granbussia is one of Piemonte’s most famous wines, but in recent vintages the Barolo Romirasco has come on strong. The Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolos capture a style that is deeply rooted in tradition but contemporary in execution.

  - Alfio Cavallotto
  - Cavallotto remains one of the best-kept secrets in Piemonte. Siblings Alfio, Giuseppe and Laura Cavallotto release their Barolos a little later than most of their colleagues, which means the wines are sometimes overlooked (hence the 2007 being presented in the 2008 tasting). Cavallotto fans know the estate’s top Barolos are among the most pedigreed and age worthy in the region. The two Riservas, Vignolo and Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe are the dual flagships at this traditionally minded estate.

  - Pio Boffa
  - One of Piemonte’s established houses, Pio Cesare has made outstanding wines for decades. Under the leadership of proprietor Pio Boffa the wines have become more consistent than they have ever been.
    The estate makes two Barolos; a Barolo ‘classico’ that draws upon multiple sites, and the Ornato, which emerges from one of the best vineyards in Serralunga.

  - Proprietors Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno have made some of the most exciting wines in Piemonte over the last few years. Cogno is located in the Ravera sub-zone in Barolo, a collection of sites capable of yielding exceptionally elegant and polished wines.
    Today, the style is traditional yet super-refined. Cogno remains one of the under the radar jewels of Piemonte.

  - Roberto Conterno
  - Giacomo Conterno is one of Piemonte’s most historic properties, with a brilliant track record that goes back to the early 1900s. Conterno was among the first wineries to own their own vineyards and sell into export markets. The estate’s signature Baroli Cascina Francia and Monfortino are made from the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga, one of the most pristine sites in all Italy. In particular, the Barolo Riserva Monfortino is considered one of the great wines in the world based on its ability to age spectacularly for many decades after its release.

  - Guido Fantino
  - Conterno-Fantino is one of the beacons of fine, artisan Barolo. The estate’s vineyards in Ginestra and Mosconi are some of the finest in Monforte.
    These sleek, modern wines boast incredible class and elegance from start to finish. The estate’s signature wine is the Barolo Sori Ginestra, which is often among the best wines in the region. Conterno-Fantino is one of handful of estates that doesn’t miss a beat from the simplest wine all the way to the top of the line.

  - Gianluca Grasso
  - Gianluca Grasso crafts exquisite Baroli from Ginestra, Gavarini and Runcot, all top sites in Monforte d’Alba. Although often considered one of Piemonte’s fastest rising stars, the reality is that the wines have been stunning here for many years. The Baroli Ginestra Casa Mate and Gavarini are made along traditional lines, while the Riserva Runcot is aged in French oak barrels. These are but details though, what comes through most in the Grasso Baroli is the impeccable elegance of the fruit.

  - Chiara Boschis
  - Proprietress Chiara Boschis runs this small property in the center of Barolo with her trademark boundless passion and enthusiasm. The main wines are Barolos from Cannubi and Terlo, formerly known as Via Nuova.
    Boschis’s Barolos reflect the contemporary values of the modern school of viticulture and oenology. These are some of the prettiest and most expressive Barolos readers will come across.

  - Luca Sandrone
  - Since 1978 Luciano Sandrone has turned out some of the most elegant and refined wines in Piemonte from his holdings in and around Barolo. In most vintages Sandrone’s Barolo Cannubi Boschis is one of the region’s benchmark wines. The Barolo Le Vigne combines a contemporary approach to vineyard and cellar work with fruit drawn from top vineyards across multiple villages, reviving a tradition that is now mostly lost.

  - Enrico Scavino
  - Proprietor Enrico Scavino, along with his talented daughters Elisa and Enrica has been at the forefront in making rich, textured Baroli that can be enjoyed relatively young, but without sacrificing longevity. The Scavino family owns vineyards in many of Piemonte’s top sites across multiple villages. It’s hard to know where to start, the Baroli Bric del Fiasc, Cannubi and Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata are all benchmarks.

  - Giuseppe Vajra
  - One of the characteristics that world-class properties share is consistency across their entire range, and that is without question one of key elements that places Vajra among Piemonte’s elite. Aldo and Milena Vajra, along with their children, Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro, craft finessed wines that capture the essence of the Piemontese artisan tradition. The Barolo Bricco delle Viole, from the Vergne sub-zone, is the flagship, but the reality is that is virtually impossible to go wrong with any bottle that emerges from this cellar.

  - The Vietti, Currado and Cordero families boast a rich history that goes back many decades. Vietti was among the first growers to bottle single-vineyard wines, own their vineyards and build a significant presence in export markets. Although the wines have always been benchmarks, they have never been better than under the current stewardship of brothers-in-law Luca Currado and Mario Cordero.

  - Roberto Voerzio
  - Roberto Voerzio is renowned for a maniacal approach in the vineyards, which results in some of the richest, deepest Barolos being made today. Everything in these cramped cellars is bare-bones, which allows the unique voice of each of Voerzio’s eight La Morra single-vineyards to speak with notable eloquence. In particular, Voerzio’s wines from weaker vintages set him apart as one of the most gifted growers in Piemonte, Italy and the world.

La Festa del Barolo is conceived as an educational event that brings consumers closer to the great wines of Piemonte through a series of specially tailored tastings and dinners. In keeping with our mission, the first event at La Festa del Barolo is an educational seminar (not open to the public) that will be held on Friday April 26 at Maialino for the benefit of the sommeliers who are working the weekend.

Charity is a second pillar of La Festa del Barolo. In 2011, La Festa del Barolo raised $45,000 for the victims of the Japanese earthquake/tsunami. This year we are proud to support the Robin Hood Foundation and their The Robin Hood Relief Fund, which supports a number of programs designed to benefit the millions of people in the tri-state area displaced and affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Wineries have been chosen based on their long-term track records in The Wine Advocate and Piedmont Report. Unlike the overwhelming majority of events in the industry, wineries do not pay anything to participate in La Festa del Barolo. This guarantees that wineries are chosen not on the size of their marketing budgets – as is typically the case – but solely on the quality of their wines. Attending winemakers have been given an option of bringing a guest to both Saturday events or receiving a stipend to offset travel expenses. La Festa del Barolo has either paid for the wines served during the 2008 Barolo tasting, or will make a charitable contribution equal to the value of the wines to Robin Hood. The Gala Dinner treats all guests equally. In the spirit of Burgundy’s end of harvest celebration luncheon, La Paulée, all attendees are asked to share a bottle (or more!) from their own cellars with fellow guests.
